Pablo Picasso: Art and the Conscience of 20th Century Europe

  • Paul Spring Community (map)

In this class, we will explore the work of perhaps the most venerated and ridiculed artist of the 20th century while many disdain Picasso’s abstractions, the emotional and moral component of his artistic endeavors is complex and admirable. Although some see his paintings as child-like, Picasso’s complex and innovative renderings of people and historical events are worthy of study. The class will begin with a PowerPoint lecture highlighting both Picasso’s early, more realistic representations and his turn toward abstraction and cubism. A practicum will follow the lecture. As a group, we will produce a copy of a Picasso painting, replicating his unique vision of the human form. Upon completion, we will participate in a critique of our paintings.
