How did we get here, musically speaking? Join musician, songwriter, and radio DJ Josh Urban to trace the origins of rock ‘n roll. You’ll learn about early ragtime, blues, and jazz, build a simple instrument, and follow the music up the Mississippi to the smoky bars of Chicago where the invention of the electric guitar would fundamentally alter music as it was known. Listen in as we spin records and study Scott Joplin, learn to write a blues son, and enjoy live guitar demonstrations of the sounds that laid the foundation of rock ‘n roll. This music is a uniquely American sound, and is part of our heritage.
How did we get here, and - where are we headed? Come learn about our history, become a curator of the sound, and… participate in the creation of it! In addition, participants will have the option to learn about new ways to listen to music using their smartphones to access a vast, free library of music online.
April’s session will be, “Dawning America - Victrolas, Ragtime, and the seeds of a sound.” Followed in May by, “That Delta Sound- Bedrock of Rock” (Plus build an instrument!) In June, Josh Urban will present, “It’s Electric! How the electric guitar sparked a revolution.”
