Since the mid-18th century, Danville, Virginia has been known for its cultivation of bright leaf tobacco. IN 1865, Danville achieved notoriety as the last capital of the Confederacy following the fall of Richmond to Federal troops. In this multi-part lecture series, we explore the establishment of Danville, its development into one of the South’s foremost tobacco manufacturing centers, the events surrounding its “last capital” story and its resistance to the civil rights movement in the 1960s.
