Puerto Rico and the United States

  • Ashleigh at Lansdowne (map)

The United States conquered Puerto Rico, not just from the Spanish but from Puerto Ricans who sought independence. That desire for a nation has led some in Puerto Rico to engage in violence against the US occupation of the island. Throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century, Puerto Ricans have been divided on the benefits of remaining a commonwealth associated with the United States. The relationship between the US and Puerto Rico has been one of tension and is still to be determined.
