James Whistler: For Art's Sake

  • Ashleigh at Lansdowne (map)

In this 90 minute class, we will explore the work of James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Whistler was an American artist who painted during the 19th century, largely in the United Kingdom. Rather than explore psychological or moral issues, Whistler believed in producing art for its own sake.

The class will begin with a 20-minute PowerPoint lecture tracing the development of Whistler’s unique style. A 50-minute practicum will follow the lecture. As a group, we will produce a copy of a Whistler work, focusing on his ideas of painting paralleling music compositions. Upon completion of our painting, we will participate in a 20-minute critique of our work.
